Dr. Cheryl Mathews

Course Author
Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.)

Early in my career, I had debilitating speaking anxiety and had to figure out how to overcome it. I know how painful it is—it put my career and life goals on hold for over a decade. Then I attended a public speaking phobia program that changed my life (it no longer exists). I went on to become an executive in major corporations and tech startups where I continually faced high-pressure speaking situations. In this course, I've pulled from my own experience and from speaking anxiety research to explain why anxiety and panic happens and how to get unstuck. No matter what level of anxiety you have, it is possible to get better.

"Helped me reduce my anxiety. Dr. Mathews assessed my personal situation."

I was struggling with anxiety during work presentations. In addition to everything I learned in the course, Dr Mathews provided a free 30-minute consultation. She gave an honest assessment of my speaking anxiety then provided resources to help me further improve.

"I recommend it to anyone with career-limiting anxiety."

This course is a terrific place to start toward conquering, what for many, can be career-limiting anxiety. As you move into leadership positions, you'll have to present in high-pressure situations. The course gives you the knowledge and steps to get there.

Chris Mason // Leadership Dev Exec

"I used information from the course immediately in my job."

This course is a fantastic place to start and build momentum toward overcoming this fear. It was the confidence boost I needed to get the ball rolling after neglecting to pay attention to this fear for 15+ years.

"How to train your body and mind to be less fearful"

This is the most comprehensive and approachable exploration I've seen of the origins, remedies, and actions you can take to address speaking fear. Whether your fear is speaking with big groups or small, it teaches a nice theoretical and practical basis to reduce fear.

Robert Rich // Executive

"I highly recommend this course to anyone with anxiety, stress or panic in speaking situations."

This course will give you a fundamental understanding of what's happening in your mind and body and how to begin to overcome it. Some of these concepts had never occurred to me in a clear and scientific form.

Chaz // Software Developer

"Provides an insightful understanding of speaking fear and achievable steps for overcoming it."

The combination of clear teaching, helpful graphics, short learning segments, interactive feedback, and the opportunity to practice creates a powerful learning environment.

Do I have to take the course in one sitting?

No, you don't have to take the course in one sitting. You can pause, stop and start the course at any time. You can exit the course and come back to it later.

What do I need to take the course?

Modern computers have everything you need. You’ll need a computer or tablet with a browser and an internet connection. You may want to use headphones to listen to the videos.

What is your refund policy?

We do not offer refunds because, once you buy the course, you have access to all of the content and proprietary materials.

What path do you recommend for someone with high speaking anxiety and/or panic attacks?

I recommend the Essentials Course and the Desensitization Laboratory (LAB). You need three things to improve: Information, personalized coaching tailored to your situation and supportive group practice where you can experiment with new anxiety management techniques. The Essentials course lays the groundwork with critical information and it works with the LAB to provide the personalized coaching and safe practice necessary to overcome high speaking anxiety and/or panic attacks.

How long does it take to overcome high speaking anxiety?

Overcoming high speaking anxiety takes time because the fear center in your brain is programmed to believe that speaking is dangerous. It takes time for the fear center to trust that certain speaking situations are safe.

Most participants in the SpeakMeister program see a 50% reduction in their fear after completing the Desensitization Laboratory (LAB). Then there is continual progress at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. It’s like going to the gym to improve your physical fitness - it requires practicing the right way over time to make progress.
